8th Grade Digital License - Preparing for the South Carolina READY Text-Dependent Writing Assessment

This Informative and Argumentative Writing Test Prep product includes 53 lessons and has been created specifically to support South Carolina eighth-grade teachers as they prepare students for the SC READY Text-Dependent Writing Task.

These lessons are an excerpt from the Top Score Writing Grade 8 curriculum, which contains 106 daily writing lessons. The full curriculum teaches four genres of writing: foundational non-text-based expository writing, text-based informative/expository writing, text-based opinion/argumentative writing, and narrative writing. As the SC READY requires students to write only two types of essays in 8th grade, informative and argumentative, this product includes only the lessons students need to master those specific writing genres and succeed on the state assessment.

Lessons 21-73 are included because they are the section 2 and 3 lessons of the full curriculum that explicitly teach informative and argumentative writing from start to finish. These lessons walk students through brainstorming and organizing their thinking, creating strong claims, and learning to support them through text evidence. Through explicit instruction, modeling, and guided practice, students will learn to write effective introductions and conclusions, develop body paragraphs, and use a variety of elaborative techniques. All lessons are aligned to the skills required to excel on the Text-Dependent Writing Task in the SC READY.
